Big, Big News!

We're going to adopt!

Nate and I have had our first meeting with an adoption agency, and I’m in the process of setting up meetings with two other agencies, as well. One facilitates domestic and international adoptions, the other two do just domestic or just international. I’m certain we will have lots to learn!

The parameters we’ve set for ourselves are: 1) Reasonably healthy child. 2) Any race, nationality, or gender (though we’d really like to eventually have a boy and a girl). We know we are capable of loving any child. 3) Newborn to 2 years at the time of adoption (at least for our first child – we’d be OK with older for a second child). 4) We’d prefer for it to be a closed or semi-closed adoption (meaning we don’t want constant contact with the birthparents, but we’d happily provide updates to them through the adoption agency, and would appreciate receiving updates regarding health issues and such). That’s really only an issue for domestic adoptions.

We're finding ourselves really drawn to the idea of adopting from Ethiopia, but we are going to keep our options open as we meet with people who have adopted, and with people from different agencies.

So that’s the news for today! Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers…

I would love to follow your process, ma'am. My wife and I hope to adopt in the future (at 24 years old, we don't feel prepared for that leap, but it's in the life plan). I'd love to know how the process goes for you!

You're making an amazing decision. It's a very special kind of people who can and do adopt a child and love it truly as their own.

Congratulations on this decision!

A very good friend of mine just brought her son home from Ethiopia. I'm sure she'd be happy to talk to you about her experience if you wanted to hear about it. You can email me at jane at duchessjane dot com and I can forward to her, if you're interested.
